What to Eat When Pregnant

A healthy diet is an important part of a healthy pregnancy.

If you are lacking nutrients, your OB/GYN can help you determine how to make up these deficiencies. Here’s a general list of some foods and beverages that can help support a healthy pregnancy.

Variety is key

To get the nutrients you need for your pregnancy, eat:

  • 6-11 servings breads/grains
  • 2-4 servings fruit
  • 4+ servings vegetables
  • 4 servings dairy
  • 3 servings protein

Fiber options

Look to whole-grain breads, cereal, and pasta; beans; and fruits and vegetables.

Get your vitamins and minerals

Make sure you take your prenatal vitamins daily and include vitamin-rich foods in your diet. For iron, eat lean meats, beans, and spinach. You’ll find vitamin C in oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, green peppers, and tomatoes. Get your folate from leafy green vegetables, veal, beans, black-eyed peas, and chickpeas. And include carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, spinach, apricots, and cantaloupe in your diet for vitamin A.
